Verdant Beauty

Photographer: Dan Fleming - United States
Category: Nature

"This was taken in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We saw the scene just off the side of the road. It was raining at the time, but because of the long exposure the rain is not evident. The deep greens in this image really give me a peaceful feeling every time I view it."

Comment: I think this photo is amazing! The depth of color is such that the boulders look like they have been enveloped in velvet. The shades of the grasses and plants are just enough different to trick you into trying to touch and see if they are real.

Comment: Well said, Roger. Ellen, I urge you to take the time and look more closely at the photos. Try to remeber that a great photograph is more than just a factual record. The time of day, the light conditions, the exposure settings, the angle of view, countless other decisionsmade by the photographer, either consciously or not, all contribute to creating a unique image. Regarding portraits, consider the many portraits we see of people we will never know personally, such as politicians and celebrities and how those images make us feel that we do somehow know that person.

Comment: Ellen, Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. I think it is a wonderful photograph with the blurred water and the vivid lush greenery surrounding it. Just because you don't care for for the photo, I would not knock it or Kodak.

Comment: today's picture is nothing much, as is most of your photos of the day; and-why print pictures of kids nobody knows except the camera person????
